Sunday notes

Spring is over - high winds and drizzle rule the roost this afternoon. And more of the same through the week, if I look at the weather charts. Still on the weatherfront, no hurricanes around at the moment. The southern hemisphere season is on the decline. The season in the northern latitudes is due to start in just over a month. The Eastern Pacific whirls into action from May 15th onwards, and the Atlantic season on June 1st. Dire predictions were issued for the Atlantic basin earlier last week, but a more reliable forecast will be published around the start of June.

A Slovenian man, Martin Strel, has finished a record-breaking swim - the length of the Amazon River in South America. Starting on February 1st at Atalaya, Peru, he has conquered the world's second longest river in 66 days, covering 5,265 km (3,272 miles). His daily average distance was 52 miles, 84 km. Dangers included piranhas and pirates. More on this story on the BBC News website
