A little rain every now and again, with some brightish intervals. Went out into town to sort a few things out. I wear spectacles, and one of the little pads that rests the specs on the nose had fallen off. So, a visit to the opticians was called for.
It's not cold today, about 11C, and as I had made quite a detour (via the filling station to pick up some tourist info) to get to the opticians in Kenneth Street, I was positively sweating on return. Mind you, don't wear woollen jumpers under a fleece. Better the other way round - a fleece under a jumper.
An earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean overnight, leading to a tsunami in the Solomon Islands. These are located east of Papua New Guinea. The waves were several meters high, left at least 12 dead and caused serious damage. An update can be found on this BBC report. When I heard of the quake, just after midnight last night, the tsunami alert had just been lifted. The tremor measured 8.0 on the Richter scale, but occurred under the ocean. The resulting lift or fall of sub-sea terrain gives rise to giant waves. The worst example occurred just over 2 years ago, on Boxing Day 2004. An earthquake measuring 9.1 off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, gave rise to a 20 ft tsunami along coasts thousands of miles away.

I was at the beach yesterday and noticed a sign on the street that said "Tsunami evacuation this way" and it had an arrow pointing which way to go. Scary stuff.

How very scary Guido! an 8.0 on the Richter scale is seriously strong! How terrifying for those poor people swept out to sea without any warning. I always thought the beach emptied of water first before it swept in again? I will pray for those lost. We are so lucky to live where we do. Jeanie
