Counterbalance

Was checking the newsfeeds before turning in, and came across this article on the BBC website, which I think deserves a wide airing. I was disappointed tonight to be on the receiving end of emails, showing OLD images of militant Muslims demonstrating in a city somewhere in the UK, vowing to turn the country into an Islamic state. I seem to remember that several of the demonstrators were taken to court over that. It was only to be expected following the events at the end of last week.

The website islamispeace.org.uk seeks to propagate Muslims' opposition to terrorism. Although I'm not a Muslim, I would like to take the liberty of copying the site's mission statement. If only to demonstrate that Islamic terrorism is only supported by a tiny if vocal minority.

The Muslim communities across Britain are united in condemning the attempted bombings in London and Glasgow.

We are united with the rest of the country at this critical time and are determined to work together to avert any such attacks targeting our fellow citizens, property and country.

Islam forbids the killing of innocent people. We reject any heinous attempts to link such abhorrent acts to the teachings of Islam.
•    British Muslims should not be held responsible for the acts of criminals.
•    We commend the government for its efforts to respond to this crisis calmly and proportionately, and welcome both the Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s and the Home Secretary’s emphasis on the need to distinguish between the overwhelming majority of British Muslims who are law-abiding citizens and a few criminals who seek to inflict harm and terror on our country.
•    We express support for the emergency services who are working tirelessly and courageously to avert these attacks and ensure the safety of our country.
•    We urge the media and all politicians to continue to maintain the values of our open society, free from prejudice and discrimination, sustained by tolerance and mutual respect for all.
•    We call on our government to work towards a just and lasting peace in areas of conflict around the world and to take the lead in helping eliminate the injusticesand grievances that foment division and nurture violence.

The unity of our society must be maintained and we must not allow divisions to emerge between us. We must remain friends, neighbours and colleagues, and take Britain forward as one nation – towards a Greater Britain.

  1. I wanted you to know that sharing this with us tonight educated those who are not politically informed or even trying to be politically correct.  I don't believe that the majority of moslims are about the Jehad.  It is a fringe lunatic group.  I'm always open to learn more.

Thank you so much for stopping by and visiting my journal today.  I am ever and always happy when you say hello.

  2. It must be such a scary time for those British Muslims who stand behind this Islamispeace Statement.  They too are facing the same terrorism, as well as a backlash from bigoted individuals who want to tar them all with the same brush as these radical Muslim terrorists, bigots who want to burn their shops and homes in retaliation.
These people are in the same boat as ourselves.  Bombs don't discriminate.  We found that out with the Black September Groups and the IRA in years gone by.  We must keep our heads and hearts about us in times like these.  Jeanie

  3. I think you did a good service in copying this.  It is good to be reminded that the majority of Muslims are not represented by the factions causing problems across the globe; something we should remember about any and all radical groups.

  5. This is the kind of information that should be circulating in our emails rather than all that negative, hateful, anti-Islamic crap that I've seen. bea
