Tuesday notes

Fairly bright morning, but with some cloud about. We're being promised showers - hope they stay away.

The investigations into the Glasgow and London attacks are now spreading worldwide, with an Indian doctor being arrested at Brisbane airport. He was about to leave Australia on a one-way ticket to India. The arrest comes as a result of the seizure of a mobile phone at the scene of one of the failed London attacks.

It's pretty busy with guests up here at the moment; one couple are heading down to Harris for the day. That part of the island is 30 miles away at the very least, and although it is a two-lane main road, it still takes an hour to cover the 37 miles to Tarbert. The famous church at Rodel is 55 miles away, at times along single-track roads. The other guest, who hails from Sweden, has hired a vehicle to go round the ancient sites on the West Side of Lewis. If the weather holds, mrs B and myself are going up to Ness to view the machair flowers.

The machair [pronounce the CH gutturally, as in LOCH] is a habitat unique to the Western Isles. It is created by seasand, containing ground-up shells, blowing onto the poor peatlands that cover the islands. Peat is acidic, but when the sandblow comes it neutralises the acid, creating a fertile environment. The carpet of wildflowers that results is spectacular. This is an image I took a year ago.

  1. The flowers look so lovely.I am glad another arrest as been made at least thats another terrorist off our streets. Although now they are saying that there was information about this attack 2 weeks ago.It makes you wonder what else is known to the goverment and other authorities.

  3. The flowers are lovely, can't wait to see the picture you'll take this year.  Can't believe how many doctors are involved in this terrible thing.  People here are saying their dubious about going to the doc now.  Joni from the Pacific Northwest.

  4. Beautiful field of flowers...makes you want to just walk out into the middle of them and take a nap. I hope they get all the people responsible for those acts of terror.  I just don't understand what motivates some to bring such terror to many. Security is now heightened all over the world. Why can't they just stay home and live their lives in a peaceful manner like the majority of us wish to do?  Hope your trip to the flowers went well....Linda in Washington state

  5. Hiring a vehicle is a good idea for anyone who isn't from the UK.  The whole driving on the left side ofthe road thing is hard to get used to...  :-D

Beautiful flowers......I can imagine them swaying in the breeze
