The economic meltdown of that country is now reaching the realms of the ridiculous - if it wasn't such a nightmare for the populace. One person told the BBC that she now paid more for a banana than she paid for her house 7 years ago. The rate of inflation is currently rocketing out of control at 3,700%. Many people are resorting to bartering; price controls imposed by the Mugabe regime are rigidly enforced by mass arrests.
My mind drifts back to the historical events in Germany in 1923, when inflation forced the Reichsmark into an exchange rate of 1 trillion marks (1,000,000,000,000 marks) for 1 US$. Read up what happened between 1914 and 1923 in this PBS-publication.
Inflation in Zimbabwe is expected to reach 1,500,000% by the end of the year. Robert Mugabe's economic policies are widely held to blame. He blames everybody, varying from Tony Blair to Morgan Tsvangerai, except himself.

ReplyDeleteI have read that he is imprisoning all those large store owners etc who are charging too high a price for their commodities. His dictatorship governement is the one calling too high a price from his people.
ReplyDeleteThey are starving!!!
I have never been able to fathom out why the United Nations have allowed this despotic madman to get away with so much cruelty towards his own people whilst the rest of the world watch them suffer. I am in disbelief at their own African neighbours too for not helping out by creating more pressure on him other than it always coming from sanctions by the European Nations. What is in it for these neighbouring countries??? It makes me so angry to read that in this day and age men like Mugabe can still take control and rule with cruel mad indifference to his peoples needs. Well....that's me on my soapbox for the day. This is so much in the eyes of the world yet we seem to have our hands behind our backs! Sorry for the rant....but there you are. Its how I feel on this issue.

That is just horrible. Somehow, when I've scanned the news, I've missed this :(
