Tuesday notes

Overcast and misty afternoon in the isles, with drizzle not discountable. Am going to visit a maritime exhibition in Stornoway Town Hall this afternoon. I did see it yesterday, but I noticed an updated list of casualties for the Iolaire disaster, so I need to check it against my own list. Over the next week or so, a couple of events are taking place in the town related to its maritime heritage: if I get round to them, I'll of course relay the result. Should be interesting.

Mount Gamkonorane, one of Indonesia's 129 volcanoes, is continuing to spew ash and hot gases, prompting thousands to flee its immediate surroundings. A full eruption could engulf the refugee camps closest to it. Indonesia lies on the Ring of Fire, a circle of volcanoes circling the Pacific Ocean. Volcanoes occur on cracks in the earth's crust, where so-called tectonic plates rub shoulders. When they stick together, a release of tension prompts an earthquake. Below image courtesy Wikipedia; the link gives more info on the Ring of Fire.

  1. It never ceases to amaze me that folks live with this danger surrounding them.  We humans are certainly a rare species.    We live in the hope that disaster will not visit us and carry on our daily lives as though it will not.  Brave?   Or what? I know they can't change their circumstances butI am so glad that I live where I do.
Good luck at the Town Hall this afternoon.    Jeanie
