A boat, carrying a group of cadets, overturned in Loch Carnan, South Uist, at 12.40pm this afternoon. One girl was rescued and flown to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated, and details of the fatality have not been released until next-of-kin are informed.
Loch Carnan is an island-dotted sealoch stretching inland into South Uist. The image above shows the view from Benbecula, which has similar terrain on its east coast. The search, according to eye-witnesses, took place close inshore. The Coastguard helicopter was deployed and reported to be flying above. Conditions today are very windy, with winds of 33 mph gusting to 45 mph (galeforce) in the area.

This is every parents worst nightmare Guido. How awful for this young girl's family. I have worried for my own daughter once when she was young. She and a friend went to a Heavy Metal Concert at Donnington Park and whilst there it was put out on the TV news that one person had died in the crush up against the stage. My heart leapt until she and her fiend alighted from the coach in the wee sma' hours of the following morning. You wish for it not to be your child but then some other family has to be on the receiving end of news like this.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for their loss. Jeanie
How very, very sad.
