How to sink your money

A man went to buy a yacht in Florida. Pays something like $33k for it upfront, and goes to sail it to Europe. Slight complication: it is January and the stormy season. Reaches Bermuda, ends up in storm, falls and breaks his pelvis. Only one thing for it. Helicopter winches him off yacht, which is left adrift in the Atlantic, probably never to be seen again. Ouch.

  2. If he only paid $33,ooo for it I would be suspect that it would get him to Europe, anyway.  I don't want to sound unsympathetic, LOL, but I have a feeling he may have had no idea what he was getting himself into.  I am very glad they were able to rescue him and that he is now safe and sound.

  3. He sounds like he didn't research very well. Poor thing, but who spends that kind of money without researching when to sail or even a few lessons?  Or learns about the area they are traveling. More money than common sense I say.  Still, poor fellow, painful break to have, not that any are particularly pleasant.

  4. I read this story Guido and somewhere in the report was one interesting fact.  The gulf stream may help his abandoned boat to drift towards the British Isles....keep an eye open for it and you might be able to claim it as salvage.  Lol!
I reckon this chappie had a death wish.  He had sailed with a crew before.  Why he thought he could set off wtihout one I will never be able to fathom.  I wonder what he will make of it in days or weeks to come.
Glad he was rescued though....someone was looking after him.

  7. An experienced sailor, okay, fine, knew how to contact for help and all of that, but why the heck didn't he get it insured?  Shaking my head.  Ah, well.
