Golden flops

Last night was the Golden Globes award ceremony. It was a damp squib, over in 30 minutes, where normally 3 hours of razzmatazz would have done the job. Why? Because the scriptwriters are on strike in Hollywood.

OK. Let me get this straight.

When a TV channel puts out a show like Eastenders or drama like The Old Curiosity Shop, you need a script. That's plain. Can understand.

Do you really need a script for a live show?
Does an actor need to have his words put into his mouth even at an award ceremony?
Or is it the case that the sequence of the show (the technicality) needs a script writer?

Sorry, I'm torn between not knowing and thinking that the entertainment industry is seriously challenged in the brain department.

  1. I think the celebs (and politicians) need to have their words fed to them so they don't say "the wrong thing" off the cuff and ruin their careers.  Just my opinion.  They always have notes in front of them if they do win ~ tells me they can't ad lib very well.

  3. i wonder if things will be different if these eggheads ever get over this strike? You know i love TV and i am just totally mad that LOST only has 8 new episodes coming when 16 were ordered. I could give a flip about the Golden Globes...i wanted Cutie George Clooney to win.
    Phooey.

  4. I just HAD to comment on this!  A live show needing a script??  The answer is yes if you consider what we have now in the way of actors and actresses.  In times past live shows could be done without it.  It's like Angela Lansbury said in an interview some years ago, if you look at the eyes of today's actors and actresses, you can tell there's not much going on behind them.

News anchors are the same way.  You can tell when the teleprompter goes on the fritz.  Back in the day, news anchors studied the news they were going to report and could keep going because they knew what they were talking about.

  5. I didn't even know they were on.  I don't like those awards....or any other entertainment industry awards in general. I hate watching all of these rich actors sitting around patting themselves on the back in an effort to get the public to go to the box office to see their movies, just so they all can get richer. JMO.
