Sir Edmund Hillary has died

The first man to climb Mount Everest in 1953 has passed away at his home in New Zealand, aged 88. His health had started to fail in April 2007.

Sir Edmund was made an honorary citizen of Nepal in 2003, fifty years after his historic ascent of the mountain. He accomplished this in the company of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, and he has devoted his life since to helping the Sherpa's of the Khumbu region of Nepal.

Whether he was the first man to reach the summit of Everest has been a subject of debate, as mountaineers Mallory and Irvine made a summit bid in 1924. They never returned from their expedition, and their remains were discovered several hundred metres below the summit. It is generally held that they never reached the summit.

  2. I've always held to the notion that Sir Edmund truly was first to reach the summit.  When you cant return from an expedition and left no trace of your presence it's assumed you didn't reach the peak, but the story is so incredible I cant believe this man is no longer on the planet.  RIP Sir E.  CATHY

  4. I-Tunes has a free podcast (well 80 hours worth of podcasts) called "The Rest of Everest" and I am starting to watch those.  I have always read Mt. Everest adventure books.  I cannot remember their names ever, just read and pretend I'm with them exploring, until they start getting cold!  I've seen stories on TV and also at the big IMAX theatres...I'm sure I've probably read his story.
