Today is the 25th anniversary of the ending of the Falklands War between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The conflict started with the occupation of the South Atlantic archipelago by Argentina in March 1982. Argentina has laid claim to the islands for about 2 centuries, calling them Las Islas Malvinas. UK Prime Minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher, despatched a taskforce to the islands, which took two months to recapture. The human cost was 255 British servicemen, 650 Argentinians and 3 islanders. An excellent overview of the war can be found here.
Argentina continues to lay claim to the islands, but is now committed to do so through diplomatic rather than military means.
