Gordon Brown has taken over as British Prime Minister this afternoon. I have heard various people saying they would prefer an election rather than a transfer like this. It is however NOT unprecedented. When Margaret Thatcher stepped aside in November 1990, John Major took over without an election. The next General Election took place in 1992. It is thought likely that a poll could be called next May.
Tony Blair is likely to be appointed UN special envoy for the Middle East as I type. Russia, a major player in the so-called quartet (US, UN, EU and Russia), has given its backing to the former PM. He has pulled Northern Ireland out of its state of virtual civil war in 1998. This was partly aided by the events of 9/11, which pulled the plug on American support for the IRA when Irish-Americans saw for themselves what terrorism is like.

I agree with you there on American support for the IRA dwindling after 9/11. This stopped the romanticism of the Irish cause and brought terrorism, no matter where in the world, into stark reality bringing it closer to home and more tangible to them. Tony Blair was clever enough to cease the opportunity of that terrorising diabolical moment in time to help the Irish and British cause...and thank God it worked!

I was not as bothered when Major took over from Thatcher, I liked Major still do. I just do not trust Gorden brown for some reason. Maybe its the way he as gone against Blair. Sneaky is the word i am hunting for. People do not know realise what devistation Northern Ireland went through until it was on there doorsteps i whole heartedly agree with that. It was not until Manchester was bombed that i even took notice of the unrest in Northern Ireland. The Bombing on 9/11 made the world sit up and take notice. I do think though that something will happen either in the Uk OR US in the not too distant future. The amount of terrorist arrests has me worried. I Lived in Dewsbury before i moved north, i was astounded at the terrorists that was living in and around that area. If they Live in little non discript towns like Dewsbury a City is no bother for them. My views only.

I can't help thinking of the late great Gordon Brown that played rugby for Scotland during the 70s.
