Monday notes

Just to let you know that the video Drive round the West Side is available for viewing. YouTube hasn't gotten round to putting a picture in, but it is working.

Had a very sad start to the day, when I was told that two dolphins were stuck in the shallows at Lower Sandwick. I went over there, it's a 15 minute walk, only to be told that the animals would have to be euthanised. The vet duly came out with a gun and did the necessary. Both dolphins had serious injuries and were unable to maintain their normal posture in the water. It is very unusual for large seamammals to get stuck at Sandwick, as the bay is barred by a large skerry, a rockshelf, allowing entry only along the shore.

  3. That is sad.  Glad to read your update that the other three in the pod of five, were able to swim back out in higher tide.  Once a Risso's dolphin came ashore on Assateague, unusual for it's a deeper sea dolphin.  My daughter and I waited there until it could be trasnported to a sanctuary for testing (they considered it to be ill, and we'd tried getting it back into the water a few times).  Wish I had had a way to save those digital photos back then.
