Solstice Sunsets

Yesterday's sunset: pictures taken around 10.30pm

Today's sunset, 10.30pm

Mormon Church, Newton Street, 11.30pm

James Street Roundabout, 11.40pm

Town Hall clock, 11.45pm

Why is it still light at such a late hour? Well, Stornoway lies at a latitude of more than 58 degrees north. The USA is somewhere between 24 and 49 degrees north, and mainland Britain between 50 and 58 North; Orkney is at 59 North and Shetland straddles the 60th parallel. In Lerwick, it really doesn't get dark at night. Even here, when I look outside at 1 am, there is a broad glimmer of light on the northern horizon, and it starts to get light again after 3 am.

  3. Those pictures are great. There is not much darkness there. I can't sleep in the daytime and don't sleep well at night either. If it was daylight here as long as it is there guess I would never get any sleep. Helen

  9. I enjoyed these atmospheric pictures Guido...such beautiful sunset views.   The town looks so peaceful too and the sea is almost mirror -like.  Serenity.   Thanks for capturing these  lovely moments in time and sharing them.   Jeanie

  10. Oh that would be neat to have light that late.  I wonder if people can sleep as well though.

  11. How stunning Guido, I love to see the sky and especially sunsets.  Yes, I always envied that, being light at such a late hour but then your weather on the whole is pretty bad compared to ours and it is much colder.  Swings and roundabouts.

  17. WOW! I didn't know that! I'm not sure how I would handle not having the dark of night....I love the stars and the moon so much and when we get to the northern tip of Wisconsin we are always given the gift of viewling the northern lights! Of course we are in the middle fo no where so there are no town lights to fade out the night sky......I love it up there but only for a week each year....they have bears and as much as I love them at our Zoo's the thought of seeing one while I look out my cabin scares the bejeebies out of me! lol
