Memorial Day

I gather that tomorrow, Sunday 28th May 2006, is Memorial Day in the USA. Did not know that until this year, shame on me. Although I am not British, I make a point of observing the Remembrance, Memorial (etc.) days of those countries who helped to liberate occupied Western Europe in the Second World War. In Britain, the date is November 11th. In most of Western Europe, the day is May 8th, VE-day. In Russia, it's May 9th. They lost 20 million people in the Second World War.

Have a good Memorial Day over there in the USA.
Have a nice Bank Holiday in the UK.

  4. It always surprises me that we don't have a public holiday for November 11th in the UK. In the US they have Memorial Day on May 29th and also have another public holiday on November 11th (Armistice Day). We don't even celebrate that on the actual day like the Americans, ours is on the first sunday of November so it's a moveable day. Jeannette.

  5. LOL...to totally confuse you, the actual Memorial Day in the USA is May 31st.  The government has made it a Monday holiday every year to make the weekend longer.  But thank you so much for observing and mentioning the day the US honors its fallen hero's.  November 11 is Veterans Day in the US to honor all veterans, living and dead.  That previously was a Monday holiday also but about 10 years ago, the govt. decided to celebrate it every year on the 11th.  Now that I've bored you......Have a great weekend.  Chris
