Aircraft crashes in New York City

A small aircraft has crashed into the upper floors of a 50-storey apartment building in the centre of New York City. It sparked a fierce fire in two floors, and emergency services are on the scene. Although terrorism is thought to be an unlikely cause, fighter aircraft are now flying over several US cities. There is no word on casualties.

The New York Fire Department said the aircraft struck the 20th floor of a building on East 72nd Street and York Avenue - identified as the Belaire, a prestigious 50-storey residential tower.

  2. They are now reporting it was one of the pitchers from the New York Yankees plane.  Cory Lidel (?)  Sad ... very very sad.

  3. Yes, the plane was registered to the Yankees' pitcher.  They believe he was alone and that he was experiencing mechanical problems with the plane, because he'd sent out a distress call.  Very sad.
