Hurricane update - 4 June

Tropical cyclone Gonu is now a category 5 hurricane, with winds of 160 mph, gusting to 190 mph, 380 miles southeast of Musqat. Although the effects of lower sea surface temperatures and proximity of land will shortly start to weaken the cyclone, Gonu is still expected to make landfall with winds of 120 mph. The city of Musqat could get a lashing with 100 mph winds. My TC blog has had nearly 400 hits so far today (a record), virtually all of them from people in Oman, who are obviously getting not a little worried. One of them even left a comment to the effect he was only 2 metres above sealevel. The waves associated with Gonu reach * 12 * metres.
