I was barely aware of the profile of Steve Irwin, who died last week, moments after being stung by a stingray. It is for that reason that I did not blog about the man, although I would be among the first to express sorrow at his passing.
The news that caught my eye today would probably have outraged him. Up to a dozen stingrays were found dead along Australia's Queensland coast, with their tails cut off, apparently as an act of senseless retribution. A friend of Steve Irwin's has condemned the attacks.
Let me make it clear, that stingrays are not aggressive. They have a means of defense, a poisoned tail, in case they feel threatened. Steve Irwin, were he able to do so, would probably admit that he made a mistake at the time he was struck by the ray's tail. The stingray involved in Steve's death was in close proximity to him, but began to feel threatened when a cameraman approached.

We was away on holiday when it happened and we were shocked but not surprised to hear the sad news. Steve Irwin seemed a really nice bloke and he obviously really loved the dangerous creatures that we saw him with on TV. Hw will be very much appalled at the death of the stingrays, what a dreadful thing to happen. The idiots responsible are beyond contempt.

it made me think about death... and how much none of us really know when our time has reached its end; it takes us by surprise. We've better enjoye life fully, at much "fully" as it means for us, every second and moment of it, like Steve irwin did. Perhaps a short life, but well fulfilled.

Man at his worst, blindly killing whatever fits the profile of a stingray. Do these people think the stingray can learn a lesson from this?! To do this, they must not even comprehend whay Irwin stood for. - Barbara
ReplyDeleteWhat mindless morons! It just goes to show the mentality of some people. Steve Irwin would have been appalled, it just shows that these people never learnt a thing off him .... how to respect nature and wildlife. Jeannette xx http://journals.aol.co.uk/jlocorriere05/Welcometomytravels
ReplyDelete"Crocs rule!" Goodbye, Steve-o, hugs mate. xoxo CATHY
ReplyDeleteHe would have been the first to have condemned such mindless idiosy! It was a tragic accident; in his chosen profession he often courted disaster, and this time it happened. If I understand the reports right, he wasn't stung by the stingray, but the barb actually went into his chest and into his heart. Also, if I have read correctly, it is extremely rare to be killed by a stingray; I believe there are only three documented deaths prior to his. I hope they catch the idiots who did this horrible thing.
