Long days / long nights

At the summer solstice, the sun rises in Stornoway at 4.20 am, and sets at 10.35pm. It does not get wholly dark, as a glimmer of light remains on the northern horizon. Effectively, it does get a little dark after 11.45pm. It starts to get light again by 3 am. The birds are very busy, with the blackbirds feeding a large chick in the back garden yesterday. When I watch the 10pm BBC News, it is fully light outside. Down in London, it is pitch dark, and I smile.

In winter, the sun rises at 9.15am and sets again at 3.35pm. On cloudy and / or rainy days, the streetlights remain on all through the day. The long evenings become evident in late April.

  1. We of course never that here in Washington.  Although our sunset is getting later and our sunrise earlier.  But at this level on the globe...we do have a period of total darkness during the late night and early morning hours.  I would love to go high up in Alaska or somewhere where that happens...Linda in Washington state
