Railroad crossings

One teenager was killed this morning and two injured when their car collided with a train on a level crossing in Invergordon, Easter Ross. The crossing had lights and an acoustic signal.

People running the gauntlet of trains on level crossings play with their lives. A train weighs upward of 100 tonnes, and can take hundreds of yards to stop. In a contest, the train always wins. Even with lights and barriers, some people cannot be bothered to wait for the minute or two it takes for the train to pass through. There is this sorry litany of drivers who think they can beat the trains and lose. More often than not, they lose and pay with their lives.

  2. The same thing happens over and over here in the U.S.   My former husband worked on the railroad for 35 years, first as a brakeman and the last 20 years as an engineer.  When we were married and he'd come in off work, I could tell by the look on his face when there had been an accident.  One time it was a car with 4 teenager boys, that went around the crossing arms...all killed...the train was going 50 miles per hour (legal speed for that area).  He had nightmares for months.  And then the families tried to sue all of the crewmen plus their wives.  The case was finally dropped.  My feelings were...a little cold I know...I felt the crewman should sue the families for not training their kids better.  Those men will will never get those images out of their minds.  And I understand the loss the familes felt....however vehicles and moving trains just don't mix.   Linda in Washington state

  3. People will always try to beat trains on level crossings. I don't know why they do it, it's just so stupid! I feel so sorry for the families left behind. Jeannette xx  http://journals.aol.co.uk/jlocorriere05/Welcometomytravels/
