Tropical cyclone Nelson has formed in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, Australia. The strength of the cyclone is giving cause for contradiction between the Hawaii-based JTWC and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. I'll quote the latter's latest bulletin:
TOP PRIORITY
TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 36
Issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane
Issued at 8:21pm on Tuesday the 6th of February 2007
A Cyclone WARNING is now current for coastal and island communities from BURKETOWN to PORMPURAAW.
At 7:00 pm EST [6:30 pm CST] Tropical Cyclone Nelson, Category 2 with central pressure 985 hectopascals, was relocated near latitude 16.6 south and longitude 140.4 east which is 110 kilometres north northwest of Karumba and 190 kilometres southwest of Kowanyama.
Tropical Cyclone Nelson is expected to resume its east-southeast motion while intensifying up to landfall on the coast between KOWANYAMA and KARUMBA early on Wednesday morning.
DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with are likely to develop on the coast between Pormpuraaw and Karumba tonight with gusts to 140km/h near the centre of the cyclone.
Coastal residents between Pormpuraaw and Karumba are specifically warned of the dangerous storm tide as the cyclone crosses the coast. The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level well above the normal tide, with damaging waves and flooding of some low-lying areas close to the shoreline. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so
by the authorities.
