Hurricane Season 2007

I know that it's at least 3 months until the hurricane season starts again - in the Eastern Pacific on May 15th, and in the Atlantic on June 1st. Nonetheless, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Those in the eastern and southern USA who are in the firing line of Atlantic hurricanes can now subscribe by email to the latest advisories from the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Please bear in mind that some of this information is very technical and requires a reasonable level of knowledge of meteorology. Can't say I understand all of it myself.

If you have a look at the NHC sign-up page, you'll see a range of options. For the majority of people, the Public Advisories will be all you need, including Updates. The latter will be issued if developments occur which do not brook delay until the next advisory, which are issued 6-hourly. If you're interested there are also discussions, which can give an early warning of significant tropical systems forming.

The Eastern Pacific hurricanes usually affect only mainland Mexico, although the remnants do affect the southwestern USA at times, but not with strong winds. I do not believe hurricanes will affect California, as the temperature of the sea is too low to sustain a tropical hurricane.

If you don't know much about tropical hurricanes but would like to learn about them, you could do worse than visit the On-line Weatherschool.
