Hurricane update - 15 February

Tropical cyclone Favio is now approaching Rodrigues Island, east of Mauritius. I relay the Cyclone Warning, translated from French:

A cyclone warning of the 2nd category is in force at Rodrigues.

At 16.00 hours, the Tropical Storm FAVIO was centered 120 km / 75 miles NNW of Rodrigues within a radius of 50 km / 30 miles of position 18.7S 62.8E. FAVIO continues to approach Rodrigues on a southwesterly course with a speed of 20 km / h or 9 knots.

On this course, the centre of FAVIO will pass 75 km / 47 miles NW of Rodrigues by evening. A minor deflection towards the south could bring the centre dangerously close to Rodrigues.

Active cloudbands from FAVIO are currently affecting the weather on the island with moderate to severe cloudbursts. Winds from an easterly to northeasterly direction, with speeds of 70 km /h (45 mph), with gusts up to 110 km /h (70 mph) are blowing across the island. The sea will become very high.

The public on Rodrigues is advised to take the necessary precautions.
