Lingering light
The accompanying pictures, taken at 1 a.m., show the light that lingers in the north at the depth of the night up here. Sunset: 10.20 pm, sunrise: 04.25 am. Darkest time of the night: 01.20 am. The solstice is 18 days away. Stornoway is at 58° N (London is at 51°N, Vancouver (Canada) at 49). We are 8° south of the Arctic circle, hence the lingering dusk. At Lerwick, on the 60th parallel, it remains formally light all night, although the sun does set for a few hours. It's magical.
