Iraq

Today is the 4th anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq. I have blogged about the background to that event before, and won't bore you with a rehash. Suffice to say that the situation is far from ideal, with more than half the people saying they think the situation is bad. Daily car bombings across the country, a continuing and increasing insurgency does rate as bad in my book too.

I have to agree with the Saudi prince that was on BBC News earlier, who said that the American presence acted as a mustering call to the extremist cause. Many people in the Middle East have long had an axe to grind with the USA, over Israel, and see this as a simple way to get cannon fodder.

Iraq is not sufficiently stable to warrant a full-scale American or British troop withdrawal. And it may not stabilise for years to come. The situation could yet spiral further out of control if gunboat diplomacy is adopted towards Iran. Tonight, a date of end 2007, early 2008 was mooted for possible military action. If the USA do decide to attack Iran, all hell will break loose.

  2. I know Guido....and I'm NOT for this at all! I "never" liked his father as our president, and I feel that he's in office to try to finish what his father tried to do in his term. Desert Storm! Which I of course disagree with also! I don't believe in any wars at all. And For Bush to "think" that he can go around and "police" the world...is insane! When he comes on the tv to give some speach of his, he does nothing but talk about how "he's" going to do this and that because this country "needs" to be this way or that way! I diagree with him! They need to be left alone! I don't blame other countries to hate the US! All because of who is representing us! And Bin Loudin does not live in Iraq! Does Bush think we are that stupid? We in the US are going without our soilders and all so many uncalled for deaths. And for what? 2 years ago he himself got on tv and told all of US that the war was over! He never said that it was back on! Sorry Guido....the subject of our president just hits a spot in me! And it's not a good one! I've never understood why and what we have or need a president.

  4. Isn't it frightening to know that Tony Blair and George Bush have many clever men and women at their beck and call, who are second to none in there own discipines of politics, humanitarian and civil laws, and strategicd efences, and yet not one of them had been able to get it through to  these two numbskulls the damage they are doing to our futureway of life?
This Saudi Prince has more insight than these two men put together with all their coteries of 'Yes Men'.  Wish I had seen the interview Guido.    Jeanie
p.s.  And look how they dumped Afghanistan to interfere in Iraq instead.  That poor country and our soldiers have been left to the 'dogs'.

I agree with you that if the US attacks Iran, all hell will break loose.  Let us hope and pray and exercise our voting power to make sure that it never happens.  There ARE political leaders in our country who have cooler heads and much better diplomatic savvy than our current leader.  I have little faith now in our current leader's ability to achieve sucess in this region but I do think his successor may be able to get us out somewhat successfully, although a bit brusied.
