Naha on Okinawa saw winds of 85 to 95 knots this morning at 1100 local time, when Supertyphoon Man-yi roared past, at the apex of its strength. The maximum sustained windspeeds still are at 130 knots (that is 155 mph), with gusts up to 160 knots (180 mph). It's a category 5 typhoon at the moment. The system will now begin to be incorporated in the normal airflow at middle latitudes, but will still deal a stinging blow to the far southwest of Japan, with winds close to hurricane force if not above between Sasebo and Kyoto. Not until Sunday will it take for Man-yi to cease being a tropical system. As a mid-latitude depression, it will still carry winds of 60 knots, force 11 to 12 on the Beaufort scale.
