Road to the Isles
Britain's last single-track trunkroad, the A830 Fort William to Mallaig road, is finally going to be doubled over its entire 45 mile length. This process has so far been piecemeal, with a final 4½ mile section remaining to be done between Arisaig and Lochailort. Progress was put in a higher gear in the 1990s, when a local councillor organised a blockade at the village of Morar, 3 miles south of Mallaig.
The A830 serves the major ferry port of Mallaig, from where ferries sail to the Isle of Skye as well as the Small Isles. A proposal is in the pipeline to have a ferry link to Lochboisdale in South Uist, which would cut the crossing time between that Western Isles port and the mainland from 6 to 3½ hours. Currently, ferries sail to Oban.

That's interesting to know Guido. I shall keep that for future information when we set off to tour Scotland and the Isles one fine day. Jeanie
