Saturday notes

Another dreich day, with low misty clouds. Sun might come out, but it doesn't appear to be anxious to do so.

Two accidents involving aircraft in the States. Gerry already reported on the two news helicopters that collided and crashed in Phoenix, AZ, yesterday evening. All four on board the choppers were killed. It is also reported that two WW II Mustang aircraft clipped wings at an airshow, leaving one of the pilots dead. As far as the Phoenix incident is concerned, the helicopters were trailing a car chase. I have watched a fair few on satellite TV, and this has always been one of my fears, that the posse of choppers would collide.

A northern bottle-nosed whale has swum up the River Orwell near Ipswich, southeast England. In order to prevent the creature suffering, it has now been humanely put down. It is thought that the whale entered the relatively shallow North Sea by mistake, and swam up the river. It was unable to get itself out of the shallow waters, and a decision was made to destroy the whale.

  3. I read about the helicopters incident but not the other one.  I have watched high speed chases as well.  So sad for all their families.  I think they did the right think with the Whale. They are beautiful creatures and it is wonderful that people try and save them but they said it was very sick. It was lethargic and its heartbeat was very slow.  I was the kindest thing rather than letting it suffer a lingering demise.

  4. We had no idea the problem could get so serious with the helicopters.  After a while you get used to them escaping harm.  Apparently Craig Smith flying the helicopter for Channel 15 saw that he had flown directly above the Channel 3 one that seemed to be stationary.  He spoke to the pilot of 3 and said, "Oh, oh, I seem to be above you" was cut off as they collided and both went down.  I think this will probably serve as a warning to all news copters to take more precautions and perhaps try not to move in so close to one another.  We aren't going to forget this shocking event for some tie.  I always watch Patty Kirkpatrick of Channel 3 who they said could hardly speak for her tears, and Rick Dimico, too, I feared Bruce who flies the weather copter went down as he regularly reports on line from his copter.  I was thinking hard one day about whether his job was dangerous going close to forest fires, etc.   Gerry
