Cable car accident

Map courtesy BBC ScotlandReports from Fort William (100 miles north of Glasgow) mention that two cars on a mountain cable car have collided, leaving five people with serious injuries, one of them a young child. Emergency services are on the scene, and are evacuating passengers from cars that were not affected by the incident and from the top station.

The cable car is situated on the hillside of Aonach Mor, a subsidiary peak in the Ben Nevis range, and is used by skiers (in winter), walkers, climbers and paragliders.

Apparently, one car slid loose along the cable and collided with the following one. People walked down unaided but with injuries; at time of writing (7.10 pm), the emergency services are still in attendance, and the full extent of the incident will not be known until later today.

A spokeswoman for the Belfort Hospital in Fort William expressed relief that no fatalities have occurred.
