Mount Gamkonorane, one of Indonesia's 129 volcanoes, is continuing to spew ash and hot gases, prompting thousands to flee its immediate surroundings. A full eruption could engulf the refugee camps closest to it. Indonesia lies on the Ring of Fire, a circle of volcanoes circling the Pacific Ocean. Volcanoes occur on cracks in the earth's crust, where so-called tectonic plates rub shoulders. When they stick together, a release of tension prompts an earthquake. It never ceases to amaze me that folks live with this danger surrounding them. We humans are certainly a rare species. We live in the hope that disaster will not visit us and carry on our daily lives as though it will not. Brave? Or what? I know they can't change their circumstances butI am so glad that I live where I do.
