Sunday notes

Quiet day in the isles, cloudy but so far dry.

In China, an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale has shaken the province of Yunnan, near the borders of Myanmar and Laos. The quake was centred on the provincial capital Pu'er, where buildings have collapsed, communications broken down and 2 people are known to have died.

On the other side of Asia, tropical cyclone Gonu is churning in the Arabian sea, west of Mumbai (formerly Bombay). Judging by the hits on my TC blog, people in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates are getting worried. The system will probably make landfall near Masirah Island, on the eastern side of the UAE, on Wednesday, as a borderline hurricane. Will keep an eye open.

Still on the subject of hurricanes, I copy part of the latest advisory regarding the remnant of Barry: Flood watches have been issued for southeastern Maryland, southeastern Virginia, most of eastern North Carolina and portions of South Carolina.

Tropical depression Barry has become an extra-tropical low pressure system. At 4AM EDT, the centre was located just east of Beaufort SC near latitude 32.4N longitude 80.6W and moving northnortheast at about 16 mph.

Locally heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms has already spread from central Georgia northward into most of North and South Carolina, and beginning to move into central portions of Virginia and the coastline of Maryland.

Rainfall totals up to 2AM EDT have been up to 7 inches in Florida.
Please continue to monitor the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center's output for as long as this system remains a flood threat.
