Tropical cyclones - Western Pacific

The Joint Typhoon Warning Centre in the Pacific continues to issue advisories regarding Typhoon Ewiniar, currently 310 miles northwest of the island of Yap (east of Philippines) and set to intensify further as it moves northnorthwest. Current windspeeds at 75 knots, with gusts up to 90 knots. By Thursday, the system will have peaked with sustained winds of 110 knots and gusts to 140 knots. Ewiniar will become extra-tropical (i.e. be no longer a formal Typhoon) but remains a potent system, with gusts of 130 knots as she passes Okinawa, 200 miles south of Japan. I'll continue to monitor the system as it moves north; if anyone has acquaintances in the area, please make them aware.

A new cyclone might be forming off Hainan, southern China, east of Vietnam. The JTWC is keeping an eye on this low pressure area which is not yet a tropical depression.

  1. I'm so glad I don't live there, it's a beautiful area but I don't like the sound of the winds! Jeannette xx
