Saturday notes

Showery this morning, with some pretty hefty downpours. The cloudscape compensates a little, you can watch it on the webcam. Temperatures don't merit much of a mention, with 5C at the moment.

The tropical cyclone in Australia is crossing Arnhem Land, the area east of Darwin. Once "Helen" reemerges over the open waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria, the storm will strengthen to tropical storm strength. It will serve to compound problems with high tides along the Cape York peninsula, and very high waves. A buoy near Weipa is recording waves of 4 metres (13 feet), brought on by strong, on-shore monsoonal winds from the northwest.

Meanwhile across the Pacific in California, a winterstorm is bringing heavy snow and rain. Residents in areas affected by fires earlier this year are now sandbagging their homes against possible mudslides. Stay safe if you're either in Australia or California.

  3. thanks; I'm in Southern California; we are getting rain/wind. Thankfully, I wasn't affected personally by the fires this past October, but others within a 20 mile radius are and you are right, lots of sand bags being used.
