Friday 02/06/06

A dreich start to the day, windy as well. A fishing boat is reported missing out of Gairloch, on the west coast, and the whole of the Minch is being scoured for it. Not just by the Coastguard, but also 3 lifeboats and about 5 fishermen. Oil and debris were found off Gairloch, but their connection to the incident is uncertain. By 6pm, the search was called off due to deteriorating visibility. A large Norwegian boat, the Ronja Pioneer, comes into port at lunchtime. A fishery protection vessel, the German boat Seeadler [Sea Eagle] comes in as well. Go into town at 4pm on a mission, to find a copy of Metagama. This is a book about the boat of the same name on which hundreds of Lewismen emigrated to Canada in the 1920s. The book is out of print and unavailable. I'm also having quite a job finding today's Glasgow Herald. This contains job adverts, and is much sought after. The Canadians are having a meal in house tonight, after driving round the West Side. The weather closed in, and they went no furthern than Barvas. A nice time was had by all on this, their last evening in Stornoway. Tomorrow, they're off to Inverness.
