The pilot on a flight from Glasgow to Benbecula, an island about 80 miles south of Lewis, was astonished to be told to expect delays on landing. The reason? A seal had hauled out of the sea and had decided to bask on the runway of Benbecula Airport. When a routine inspection found the animal, the control tower immediately radioed the incoming aircraft. However, the creature was safely removed and returned to the sea. The plane landed on time. The runway on Benbecula is located right next to the seashore.
As a matter of interest, the airport on Barra, 35 miles to the south, is located at the beach. You land on the beach. In other words, this is the only airport where the timetables are governed by the tides. Planes can only land at low tide. If you Google Image "Barra Airport" you'll get an idea what it's like.
