This is a dreaded phrase which is all too common in fishing communities. I last used it in June on this blog.
FV Unity (R250), picture courtesy BBC
News came through today that a fishing boat, operating out of the Fife area of eastern Scotland, had capsized in the English Channel. The 30 foot FV Unity had overturned in heavy seas off Portland Bill, south of the coastal resort of Weymouth. Two crewmembers went into the water, and managed to get on board a liferaft. The skipper is thought to have been trapped in the wheelhouse and unable to get out . John Bowman, 45, of Anstruther has been hailed as a great entrepreneur. His family are in everybody's thoughts tonight.

This is sad.
ReplyDeletePam
Yes indeed this is very sad for this area just weeks ago the meridian went down in the north sea with all hands 3 of which belonged anstruther the same town as John Bowman skipper of the unity . John himself originally from Pittenweem was very upset about those men lost on the meridian .
ReplyDeleteJohn was brought up on the west shore of Pittenweem just a few yards along from myself ,I have known him all of my life, he was definately born with the sea in his blood he lived for the sea almost married to it .John was always out to try something different he was very conservationalist minded.
John had it on his mind for a good couple of years to take his boat south to try for squid and one of the last times I spoke to him he was in two minds to get a lorry ordered up to haul the unity down south .
I'ts so sad to see that Johns dream has ended in such tragedy 'he was such a great guy who would do anything to help anybody a real character.
John will be very sadly missed by a lot of people.
My thoughts go out to all his other friends and especialy his family ,
sorely missed.
