Residents wanted

The National Trust for Scotland is looking for families to come and settle on the Island of Canna. This wee speck in the Sea of the Hebrides, south of Skye and west of Rum, currently only has 15 permanent residents. The NTS is renting out two of its properties, in the hope of enticing people to come and settle. It is hoped that bringing in new residents will contribute to the safeguarding of the school, community and economy of the island, according to an NTS spokesman.

You'll be sharing the 3 miles of Canna with a couple of thousand seabirds as well as 150 woodmice, who are no bother. The rats were, but they were knocked on the head to a tail this year.

This is one of the properties being offered for rent.

  4. This is gorgeous. How is life overthere for children, teenagers, young adults?
Many families came down the South as they could not find work up North. But work in the South does not pay, the rents are higher than the salaries, so poverty and despair is becoming a huge problem. What does your area offer in terms of work, how do people commute... all this is important for families...

  5. Looks fantastic, I wouldn't mind a two week retreat out there, but couldn't imagine living there permanently. Too remote for me!

  7. It looks nice but after a few days I'd be going barmy! Give me the city centre any day of the week to a life in the boonies! It's bad enough here with the seagulls, I can imagine the racket a few thousand could make! No thanks, I'll stay put! Jeannette xx

  8. The home is lovely, Guido.  What is the charge for renting?  LOL...I could be tempted but give me a satellite dish and computer hook up.  I'm set.  I could live carpe diem.  Chris

  10. If the kids were out on their own, and we could manage financially, I would jump at the chance to move to Canna.  I would spend my days writing, and Thomas would fish!  I guess I can dream.......
