Saturday night

A very autumnal Saturday. Pouring rain, very strong winds and mediocre temperatures. You'll have to bear with me as far as alerts are concerned, I have about 40 outstanding, but I won't be able to call round all journals tonight. I'm off to bed in a minute, been staying up a bit too late recently.

I have a techie question. I need to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 on the PC, as the support for SP1 runs out on Tuesday, October 10th. Has anyone done this upgrade, does it cause many problems, anything tips, whatever. I'll probably need to take a day off-line to sort that all out.

Which obviously leads to the observation that anyone who has NOT yet got SP2 on their Windows XP will need to install it pronto. The discontinuation of support does mean that patches for security issues etc. will no longer be provided. Please check.

  1. Well, they were naughty where I bought my computer. Naive as I am with the PCs systems, I did not realise that XP was already installed in it. I was not given any DVD to instal it with it. So, I don't know if I have to update neither. It works fine and for security I just add my own anti-virus and spy checks myself.
Good luck Guido with all this; unfortunately I would not be a good advisor on this. I do like XP though and what I used to do on my previous computer is to uninstal my anti-virus, then do whatever with XP and once it is well in place, re-instal my anti-virus as the last work, reupdating the anti-virus in the same time.

  2. Guido,

G'day and you asked a question I know much about. Installing XP SP2 is the right thing to do. I installed it pretty much when it was released the second time and have not had a problem. Infact I found my OS running better and faster. So install it and IM or email me if you are having issues - which I doubt you should my friend.

  4. I'm computer illiterate but have, at this time, Window Live Support Center downloaded.  It's a one stop shopping thing.  I'll ask my daughter about the new program.  She my tech support.  Chris

  5. I installed the SP2 several months ago, and don't remember having any problems with it.  Hopefully it'll go fine for you.
