TC George and its aftermath

Was forwarded some information about the aftermath of the category 4 cyclone George which hit Western Australia on Thursday. One person was left dead, and several seriously injured in a mining camp, some 60 miles south of Port Hedland, near to where the cyclone made landfall. Some camps had concrete underground tunnels to shelter in, others had none.

Looking at the images, I am shocked to see that the miners were housed in flimsy portacabins, in an area which is prone to tropical hurricanes. No surprise that they were torn to shreds in the face of 170 mph winds. Fortescue Mining have tried to silence workers who were evacuated to the Western Australian capital Perth, but not all would be shut up. It is unbelievable that all this is still going on in 2007; it smacks more of 1907.

Further details on this story in this entry from the Syrophenikon blog.
