Lord of the Rings

Was browsing through someone's profile, when a link turned up to a site which would generate your hobbit and elf name from your normal name. I am a long standing reader of Lord of the Rings, the epic story by J.R.R. Tolkien. It was first read to me by my 6th form teacher in primary school, 30 years ago. Although he could only finish the main thread of the story (chucking the ring down Mt Doom), I was captivated.

My hobbit name would be Dudo Chubb
My elf name Aikanáro Melwasúl

I liked the Lord of the Rings movies (2001-3), but got bored with the blood and gore sections of it. However, I appreciate that a movie relies very heavily on the visual aspects. Back in 1981, the BBC brought out a version for radio, which sticks closer to the narrative than the movie.

It's a question of taste, I suppose.

  1. I loved the film but thought it a little violent. Some things are best read enabling us to use our imaginations. My hobbit name is Dimple Bunce of Brockenborings, my elf name is Nienna Felagund! Jeannette xx  http://journals.aol.co.uk/jlocorriere05/Welcometomytravels

  2. I've loved the books since I was about 12.  Liked the movies, and could appreciate them for what they were, but have the books on cassette and on CD, and that's a lot better.  I also have a BBC version on CD that may be that Radio version.  I'll have to dig it out and check it.
