Typhoon Prapiroon ripped through southeast Asia earlier this week, leaving a trail of death and destruction. The Western Pacific has seen a procession of typhoons (the regional equivalent of a hurricane) this summer, and has meanwhile spawned another one. Maria is currently located 200 miles southeast of Guam, but appears to be on a course for Taiwan and China.
The Atlantic, it should be noted, has not had a single hurricane this summer; Alberto, Beryl and Chris (on its last legs off Cuba) were all tropical storms, albeit pretty strong ones.
Below link to the BBC website shows some images from the area affected by Prapiroon. This is incidentally Thai for Rain God.
