General Augusto Pinochet, the former dictator of Chile has died at the age of 91. He came to power in 1973 by military coup. His opponents were executed, forced into exile or disappeared. Mr Pinochet was never called to account over his [alleged] human rights abuses.
He was backed by, amongst others, Margaret Thatcher. After being stripped for his senator-ship for life, which granted him immunity from prosecution, a wrangle over his prosecution was brought to a halt by his death, earlier today.
