Monday notes

Very cold Monday, although our 5C is probably topping the national bill today. Rain, small hail, snow - as well as the proverbial kitchen sink - are all coming down amidst a strong northerly blast. As of next Wednesday, the cold spell will come to an end, but eastern England is in the firing line from Siberian air that is penetrating in from the Continent. We, in the Western Isles, can look forward to more acceptable conditions with temps of about 8C by the end of the week.

I was saddened to hear of the abduction, a few days ago, of the BBC correspondent Alan Johnston in Gaza. He was coming to the end of a three year posting in Gaza, and would have come back to the UK next month. No word has been had from Mr Johnston since he left his office on Thursday. Persistent efforts to obtain his release are being made by the BBC as well as other journalists in the area. Gaza is under the dominion of the Palestinian authorities, but the scene of civil strife between various factions. Alan Johnston was the only Western correspondent based full-time in Gaza.

  3. Its been bitterly cold and windy here in the Lakes Guido. We had shot ice this morning after all the hail and snow on Sunday. Thankfully the sun got out and thawed a lot of it as they day moved on.
Iwas quite concerned to hear about Alan Johnston's abduction.  It's the no tknowing where he is or what's happened that is more disconcerting.  His family must be out of their minds with worry.  I pray he satys safe.   Jeanie
