Sunday 14 September

Fairly bright if mostly overcast day here in the islands. The remnant of Ike will disturb the weather by the end of the week, but the depression is passing far north of us, through the Denmark Strait between Iceland and Greenland. The aftermath of its passage through Texas looks pretty devastating, but could have been so much worse.

A plane has crashed in the Russian Federation, near the Ural city of Perm. It apparently caught fire when it was still 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) up, and crashed on the outskirts of Perm, near the railway track of the Transsiberian Railway. 88 passengers and crew are feared dead.

  1. I see on the long range forecast we may see rain starting Thursday. Just in time for us to drive out of town.  Today, however it's another sunny day with temps predicted in the high 70's.   The plane crash sounds dreadful. How awful for the crew and passengers if it caught fire in the air.   I just heard that the number of dead in the Los Angeles train wreck is over 25.  Apparently, the Metro Link (commuter train) engineer did not stop for a red signal, indicating that the freight train was bearing down on them.  Linda in Washington state
