Holyhead Coastguard has helped 57 anglers to
safety on Saturday evening after they were lost in fog on sands at Talacre Beach
near Prestatyn, North Wales.
At 6pm Holyhead Coastguard were alerted by Rhyl
Coastguard Rescue Team who had come across a large group of anglers,
taking part in a competition, who had become lost and disorientated on
the sands after thick fog came down. The majority of the group reached
the shore and after the Coastguard made a head count, five people were
still missing.
Hoylake and Rhyl RNLI lifeboats attended the scene, but the search was
hampered by the fog even after Holyhead Coastguard managed to establish
a communications link by mobile phone with the missing party. Rescuers
were unable to use either flares or search with a rescue helicopter due
to the fog. By about 8pm, the missing men were finally guided back to
the shore through the use of sirens on the Coastguard Rescue vehicle.

In this age of inexpensive handheld GPS devices, this scene could have been easily avoided. I carry a small one with me no matter who's boat I am on. Having said that, I applaud this group's successful efforts in guiding the lost individuals back to shore. Well done!
