Thursday notes

Very cold today, with the mercury barely above freezing at +3C / 37F. Temperatures have fallen through the night and are still going down. Hail, sleet and snow showers are passing us at regular intervals.

The English Football Association have sacked national team manager Steve McClaren after last night's 2-3 defeat to Croatia. Why the entire 11 am news bulletin had to be given over to that is beyond me. It is said though that England's failure will lead to an economic slump. In the sportsware sector. And also more widespread, because the feel good factor is gone, so workers will be less motivated. Tsk.

The data crisis (you know, personal info regarding 25 million people gone missing) is deepening, as it now appears that senior management allegedly sanctioned the actions taken by the junior clerk at HM R&C in Newcastle, to download sensitive informatin, put it on a disc and send it through the internal mail. I think the Chancellor of the Exchequer should take political responsibility and quit.

Some real news that caught my eye. A freight rail service has been agreed between North and South Korea. Although the logical next step, passenger services to Pyongyang and China, has been opposed by the North Korea, this is very encouraging news. Particularly as the North Koreans have been persuaded to shut down their nuclear program.

Iran's president, Mahmood Ahmedinajad (pronounce: I'm a dinner jacket) has come in for criticism in recent days. That's rare. It is another encouraging sign in the uncertain and dangerous times we live in. Yesterday, a female writer came out with some critical notes, and now a newspaper in Tehran has described his actions as dangerous. Well, let's hope we get some more criticism to moderate our little firebrand on the peacock throne.

As we celebrate our day of thanks here in the US, I just wanted to publicly say thanks to you.  You do a super job of keeping us informed on both continents and your hurricane reporting is vital and followed around the world.  You are an excellent addition to the J-Land family and a shining example of what community spirit is all about.  Thank you, my firend!

  2. It was obviously McLaren would have to go, they always need a scapegoat.  Truth is our footballers just do not have the talent and are grossly overpaid as we said last night in chat.

I think quite a few heads shoud roll over the loss of those discs.

You really had me laughing at loud at I'm a dinner jacket, thanks Guido.

  3. Well Guido...you have given us a lot of food for tought today.
Sorry you are feeling the rough weather.  I hate the cold!
As for the knock on effects of the England teams failure leading to an economic slump...?  Tough!  They milk the fans enough with their exhorbitant prices for everything.  Let them live off their profits of past stealth wealth.
Workers will be less motivated?  Hah!  Loosing their job for not coming up with the goods is motivation enough.

This Data Crisis is a fiasco and shaming to think that our government run industry is so tardy in its management.  Embarassing and shameful!!

North and South Korea agreeing like this is hope for the starving masses that industry between the two countries will begin.  I was elated when I heard that North Korea shut down their nuclear programme some time ago and hoped for better days for the South Koreans after loosing so many millions over the years to the famine caused by the divide between these two countries.
There is hope on the horizon at last!!!!

As for Mr Dinner Jacket....he is going to have to step back from the line soon....I will say no more on that subjet except I think I will make an extra pantry for stock piling food if he doesn't.

  4. How would you like to have most of your 11 pm news on a Friday devoted to High School Football?  That is the case in my area and it irks me to no end.  We are having temps in the 60's today, it won't last ~ a cold front is moving in this pm and temps are to drop to the 30's.

  5. I wonder how long the staff on the Tehran newspaper will have their heads?  That would be interesting to know.  It seems some of those in power in the middle east don't take critisim very well.   A freight train between No & So Korea ?  I wonder how many people will try to escape the North when the train heads South?    Linda in WA
