Although the thermometer says it's 11C / 52F outside, it doesn't feel like that at all. We have a strong westerly wind blowing and it's feeling very cold out there. Went for an amble round town this afternoon, with a view to get pictures of streets which I need for my Armistice Tribute, which is now virtually complete.
Read in the paper that a windturbine had collapsed on the Mull of Kintyre during Thursday's gales. A gust of 50 mph had the structure doubled up, with the blades on the ground. Similar incidents have happened elsewhere in the world, such as the windturbine which spun out of control in galeforce winds in Europe some years ago. The blades flew off the turbine tower!

I thought the wind turbines were suppose to generate power from the wind, not collapse. What good are they, if they can't stand up to a good breeze? There's a windmill in eastern Washington still standing that my great grand father built in the 1940's. I don't know what it's made out of but great grandpa made it stout, apparently. Linda in WA

Well it stands to reason...these things are going to want to take off given the right conditions...thankfully they are situated away from communities.
