Wednesday notes

Quite a nice day, although the sun only peeps through the clouds. Temperatures reasonable for this area, and for the time of year: 13C. No tropical cyclones to report upon, although something is brewing in the southern Indian Ocean, more than a month before the local hurricane season starts. Back in July, a cyclone briefly formed west of Australia, and what is lurking west of Diego Garcia may well turn into a cyclone as well.

Nigeria is plagued by an outbreak of polio, related to vaccinations. A campaign to have children inoculated against the paralysing illness was halted, after claims by local Islamic leaders that it was a Western ploy to have Muslim women sterilised. The disease can strike if a vaccination campaign has failed to reach sufficient numbers of the population. Vaccinated people have excreted a mutated form of the orally administered virus which then infects unvaccinated individuals. The vaccinations are progressing, and the disease appears to have been stopped in its tracks. Read more here.

  1. I have not heard of a polio outbreak in many years.  Interesting reason why they opted to stop the vaccinations.

  2. I have heard of the sugar lumps soaked in the weakened strain of the virus being capable of becoming contagious to young children and babies.  They suggest you don't go near them if you have recently had the orally administered virus.
I'm glad they were able to control the outbreak, regardless of the Islamic leaders.  I was a victim of the Polio outbreak in 1957 in Glasgow and gave my school and neighbourhood a big worry at the time.  Fumigation at school and indoors put paid to that and I recovered very well.  Thank God!
Hope you enjoy your sojourn on the Mainland Guido.  Enjoy yourself.
