Fatal dog attack

A boy of 13 months of age was killed yesterday by a Rottweiler dog in Yorkshire. The baby had been staying at the house of his aunt, aged 16, and was being carried by the aunt's 7-year old sister when he was snatched from her arms by the dog. It carried him into the yard and proceeded to attack him. Emergency services were called, and police marksmen arrived a few minutes after the ambulance. They shot the dog, still at large in the yard. The baby could not be saved.

Rottweiler dogs can grow up to 7 to 10 stones (45 to 65 kg) in weight. This animal was not initially thought to have been aggressive in the past, although neighbours did mention to reporters that it had behaved in a threatening fashion on a previous occasion. At present, the incident is being dealt with as a tragic accident by police.

I would like to extend my sympathies to the family on their tragic loss.

  1. I haven't read this report yet, but where were the parents, why was a 16 yr old left in charge of a 7 yr old, a baby and a dog. I think that dogs whether they are tiny dogs or large dogs need to be supervised when there are children around.  It is just not worth the risk. I used to have 5 dogs, two of which were German Shepherds.  I knew they would never hurt anyone, but I never took a risk, even with my own children, because you just never know.
Just so sad, another child lost.

  6. My grandson Dante was savagely bitten in the face by a dog strange to him.  A very good surgeon operated on him in the night for five hours and did a beautiful job, but he was in the hospital 7 days.  I just believe that big dogs should be watched closely around children.  I was petrified of my grandparent's dog Jack who hated kids when I was young.  We would climb up on the fence and yell for Grandma to come and save us from Jack!  I couldn't understand why they kept this mean dog!  Gerry

  9. I sympathise with this poor baby's parents.  No dog is safe with children and caution should alwyas be exercised.  I cannot understand why some folks think these enormously powerful creatures can be treat as pets.  They are built to kill!
I am in fear for my granchildren as my daughter's next door neighbour owns one which is allowed to lie out in their front garden.  The fence dividing them is only 18 inches high.  It just needs a child to scream and get excited to urge a dog in on the act.  They should not be allowed as pets.  They are stronger than their owners will ever be!
God bless this little angel...what a horrifying death!

  10. I'd never trust a dog with children. People seem to forget that although they're treated as part of a family they are animals with animal instincts. Maybe the dog was jealous of the attention the baby got, we'll never know. I just hope that dog owners will exercise care when they have dogs and children in the house. My prayers are with the poor baby's family. Jeannette xx  http://journals.aol.co.uk/jlocorriere05/Welcometomytravels

  14. As the grandmother of 2 year old Roman and a dog owner, I know the importance of being extra watchful when they are together. Roman loves Jake who as a labrador has a very sunny nature. However, he IS still a dog and I never forget that. I feel sickened by what happened to that poor baby.

    Love Sandra xxxx
