Night has fallen, after the afternoon turned out to be quite acceptable. The ferry was quite late getting in, and it is not coming back from Ullapool tonight. The reason?
Strong to gale force west or southwesterly winds are expected during
Thursday evening and into Thursday night, before becoming northwesterly
and easing a little later in the night. Gusts to around 65 to 75 mph
are likely at times, especially in association with any squally
outbreaks of rain (source: Met Office, 3.52pm).
This has also put paid to the sailing from Oban to Lochboisdale and Castlebay, at the other end of the island chain. Out at sea, winds could reach force 10.
This YouTube video shows MV Suilven in 50 foot seas near New Zealand. Suilven used to sail between Ullapool and Stornoway until 1996.

Seems strange about the time. it is not even lunch time here to be dusk there. I wouldn't want to be on that ship. I would not be surprised if it took on a large amount of water. Helen
ReplyDeleteWow, pass the dramamine! Holy cow I cannot imagine being on that ship. We cruised during hurricane Irene (I think she was right before Katrina) and our ship was rocking badly. I think the captain said 18' waves, I don't remember but the servers were not able to hold their trays and alot of the less nimble passengers were falling to the floor. Doug & I flailed about some but didn't end up on our bottoms like others did so I cannot fathom what the passengers on this ship felt! Great video, I enjoyed it.

OMG. What a video. Those seas. I've never been on any sort of large boat whatsoever but oh my goodness....talk about a ride you can't get off!! I might have to be knocked out cold in seas like that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
